G'Day all. Newbie raw lover here. I have been 'mostly' vegan for sometime and prior to that vegetarian for over 10 years. I feel I am ready for the next step in my goal towards good health. I am in the 30-something (lol) age bracket and female.

The past week or so I have fallen terribly to junk foods and way too much refined sugar. I want to loose weight and I need to get back on track with caring for my body and what better way than to take the step up to RAW!

I have worked along side many raw foodists and my health practitioner is a raw foodist. My Irridologist says I have good health apart from too much toxic congestion and mucus in my system. He says that is quite normal to see in people who eat processed and cooked foods.

So here I am. One day at a time, and prepared to forgive myself for making mistakes in the learning process.

I just made myself an awesome juice for breakfast with organic plums, pears, lemon, apple, carrot and oranges. YUMMM.  yahh

Thank you all for the warm welcoming.

No-Frontiers I will be sure to check out the information about what junk food is doing to my body (I need a good shake up). What about Xylitol as a sweetener alternative? I am not sure if it is considered raw or not as I do not know the process of making it (yet).

My biggest challenge is going to be eating out. I stick to salads (Greek without fetta). But my weakness is the yummy dressings and most seem to be mainly vinegar, lemon and oil based.
Does that mean the dressing is raw?
Can anyone offer advice for a newbie who loves to eat out at healthy cafes?

Xyiliotil ?
i've never heard about that Leon and never used any alternative before (like Agave-Raw Honey and Yaccon)...
have sweet fruits like bananas, dates,  sultanas - dried figs (soak em) and anything else that is avialable where your living...
if you like to eat out than go for your normal Salad and take an Avocado with you -- aks for just 1-2 Lemon or Orange and mash-squezze bot in the bowl of salad... dressing nowadays arent always safe, pure and raw (ask at least)...

ps.
junk food isn't doing you any good at all... it contains preservatives, additives, rancid fats, aromas that are stimulating your brain function in a crazy way making your DNA 'addictive'... its a 'fight' to believe in...belive me...
if you want to have cooked food (which is still addictive but less dangerous), stick towards whole-organic vegan foods in resonate amount... put your energy in good energy - plan your meals and amounts of RAW with wisdom, read RAW books, surf the NET and this Forum, ask Questions, find Answers, stay On-line-
some transition foods: some brown rice, whole-pasta, whole-meal bread.. steamed veggies... is all ok... but set Raw-goals and reach the level upwards and be honest to yourself... sometimes you will feel ill or sick, find support here + have a raw meal before any cooked anytime, so at least your taste buds arent brain-washed by the 'good taste' of cooked foods...

is that all? i'm sure other people have something more about to say...

Hi & welcome Leontine,

Regarding your question on Xylitol..... there was a small discussion on it a little while ago.  Here's the thread:

http://www.raw-pleasure.com.au/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=71&topic=5192.msg78083#msg78083

I am not sure if you are familiar with Dr Gabriel Cousens, but if you hang around in raw circles long enough, you will!  laugh

Anyway, he has done a lot of research on Xylitol and is using it at his Tree of Life centre in Patagonia with good results, specifically for those suffering diabetes.

I hope that helps a little.

Thanx MissGiggles and No-Frontiers.

I am going to eat 70% raw for starters then transition as time goes on.

Is steamed considered raw or cooked?

Hey Leontine,

Steamed food is cooked, but in my opinion, as far as cooking food goes, its a healthier preparation method then any other (microwaving, grilling, boiling etc) and I think that its a good method to use when transitioning to a high raw or all raw diet.

If you don't mind me asking, when you say 'health pracitioner' is that a naturopath? g.p? You're so lucky to have found a rawbie in the health industrie!!

Cheers

My health practitioner is a naturopath, irridologist, nutritionist and teaches Buteyko breathing. He is 100% raw and lives by nature, when the sun goes down he sleeps when it comes up he rises. He was a slaughter house meat inspector for most of his working life and that is what turned him off meat and eating processed foods.

I was also blessed to have a GP using totally natural methods when working with my ongoing health issues. He knew he could have lost his license to practice by suggesting non Pharmaceutical methods such as raw juicing, Noni juice and other vegan methods of curing disease. He also treated many cancer patients with B17 and Selenium successfully.

Unfortunately he has now moved back to South Africa but the knowledge he gave me was life saving and still is.

I border on leo/virgo. My name means 'lion-like' and I tend to have a bit of a roar in me when I get fired up. I am also a cat lover purrrr.

Thanx for the info about steamed foods.

Are sun dried foods considered cooked as they are cooked naturally by the sun? Or is it different as it is more of a dehydration process?

some sun-dried food (labels) are heated above sun temperature and enzymes, vitamins, all the quality lost...
a common mistake of Raw foodies in the beginning is to have lots of fats in form of nuts or seeds...
they are often not RAW and heated for known and 'unknown' reason (storage, ignorance)...
make sure you have a good amount of fresh possibly organic or spray-free fruits and vegetables everyday...
eat fruit all the day long (at least in the morning till later noon) and have a heavier meal (with fats like avos, nuts-seeds in season) later in the day so your digesting it well after proper intake of calories...
