I am keen to try a black sapote.

Does anyone have any information nutritional/etc on them?

When are they in season and if so where can I buy some in Sydney?

I can tell you there season starts in August and ends in Feb. They are amazing. When you do try one, one other way too have them is to scoop one into a bowl and pour some agave on top. It really brings out the flavour even more.

Sach!

I have found them very hard to source.

I have asked in quite a few greengrocers but they all say “there is no demand for them”.

I have only ever found them in two places:

1) Frenchs Forest Organic Markets on a Sunday morning 8am – 12pm

2) An on-line organic shop delivering Sydney wide – I can’t remember their name – sorry. I will try to remember and post back. The on-line store I brought them from did not advertise them. I put in a request and they got them especially for me. I didn’t even need to buy a tray, I just got two or three to try.

It is also called the Chocolate Pudding Fruit, as supposedly it looks and tastes like chocolate (not to me though).

So you may want to ask for the fruit under both names, as some people list it as Chocolate Pudding Fruit.

White Sapotes are even harder to get hold of.

Maybe some of the independant Farmers markets will have them.

How rare is white sapote? Got a whole box!

It just a black persimmon! Not as sweet with it orange counterpart!

Mmmm I have been craving black sapote ever since moving to Tassie. I always got them ordered in, in the organic store I worked in in Brisbane and no-one much trusted them so I always ended up with a free heap of bursting, squashy, falling apart perfectly-ripe fruit! One source says 130 cals per serve (one fruit I guess?  crazy) lol!

We have just started getting them at the Townsville markets again this year.  A lady brings them in every Sunday from Tulley - they don't spray.  She has black ones and yellow ones.

The black ones are really high in vitamin c, and are known as chocolate pudding fruit.  They average around $1.60 each.  I like eating them with nutmeg or cinnamon.  The yellow ones are nice too, but quite different.
