Hi everyone, smiley
being new to raw having done some reading on various web sites I have found that there is some discussion as to whether oats are raw.  I use unprocessed 4 leaf organic oat kernels that are rolled without heat through stainless steel rollers, is this raw?  If not can you tell me why and how to treat oats to use them in a raw diet?  Also what is a good book for beginners to raw?

Hullo Frangi!

I'm not sure about the oats you are using. My local organics shop (Relish Organics) has oat groats and they have been 'lightly steamed'. I bought a small amount and soaked and sprouted them and they grew little tails so they were fine.

These can be soaked, sprouted and dehydrated into a flour then used in cakes and crackers if you like.

I wonder if oat grass is possible for juicing like wheatgrass? That would be better I think. I really try to avoid eating grains as they don't sit well with me. But find what works for you.

Books.... depends on what you would like the book for, theory or recipes or overall view. I get asked this a lot. Mostly people are really happy with what I send but everyone is different and what works for one will not neccessarily work for all.

If you are after recipes then Alissa's book, 'Living On Live Food' with or without the DVDs is brilliant. "Ani's Raw Food Kitchen' is also great for recipes. Alissa's has some theory in it as well. You can check them both out in the shop under books>>recipes.

Then if you would prefer low fat recipes only "Doug Graham's High Energy Diet Recipe Guide" is great.

If you are after theory then Alissa's book is great again, as is "Green for Life", or "12 Steps to Raw" both by Victoria Boutenko. Doug Graham's book 80-10-10 is highly thought of by many for it's information.

I hope this helps.

Hi Raw Sensation smiley
thanks for that, since i posted i have not been too concerned about oats.  In fact eating lots of raw foods i have not desired much at all in the way of grains.  I feel so much better for it.  Gets a bit hard when i am cooking for 5, all different types of menu styles - cooking for oldies with no teeth, baking bread  etc and for hubby who loves smoothies and salads but no way to full raw!  I do ok though even though i do weaken some times.  Will look through books for sale on the RP site and order one of those suggested.  The internet is also a great source of recipes - your site is great especially tailored to the Aus taste - if that makes sense and there is so much support for a newbie, i have been raw 2 months nearly now and accept that i will need to be raw for the rest of my life.  I have psoraisis which is slowly responding to the raw way of life,  being raw is easier than many other ways of life and 'diets' and i feel so much better.  Thanks again frangipanni rofl

Hello love! I know how you feel. I often make four different meals per night and it can be a strain and is often a temptation. I've just recently had a chat to the kids about cheese and they were quite fine with cutting that out. Awesome.

You are doing really well. Have you read Lulu's journal? She has some great photos up that show her progression with psoriasis.

-_-Hi Raw Sensation, It's great to hear of others preparing heaps of meals at once, I often feel as if all i do is cook and want to go on strike! yahh following your suggestion had a look at lulu's journal and was so inspired i started one on line myself.  I have been keeping one roughly in a "little black book" of my own where i write some of my recipes etc till I try them enough to be posted, I could not find her photos as am learning my way around this site.  I typed in lulu's journal in the search box ... where do i go from there to find the pics?  sos Just love the smileys!!

Yes smileys rock don't they! To go to Lulu's journal go to the journals section and then click on her journal. I can't remember which page the photos are on. You can click and scroll. I'd start at the last page and work my way back.

She is fantastic!

BerryBliss still cooks for her family as well. She is awesome and KarenLovesRaw too. My goodness can she cook and uncook. In fact they both can. Two of the most talented chef's I've met!
