Hi there, sorry I looked around and couldn't find the introduction board, please move it if this isn't the right spot!

I've joined up to learn more about raw because a lot of cool people I hang out with talk about being raw foodies. I don't know much about it other than, well, eating raw food snicker So I've basically come to find out 'Why Raw?' why do people do it, what's the philosophy behind it, what's the science behind it, what's it all about? I'd be grateful if anyone could point me to some good articles about raw foodage too Smiley

Hi Ayla, welcome.

People come to raw for varied reasons. Sometimes it's to feel healthier, to better enable spiritual development or perhaps to go further on from being vegetarian or vegan. Each person has their own reasons and journey. You could look through the journals here to discover many different stories that explore 'why?'

Something that seems to be a common thread though is that whether you come for mental, emotional, spiritual or physical reasons, raw seems to influence growth in the other areas too.

I recommend having a look around the boards here. I did that when I first came and found lots of helpful information specific to my questions and situation. You could also do a google search and see what comes up. I have found some great sites that way.

Check out the recipe section too for some yummy meal ideas.

Have fun exploring!

Welcome! Nice to meet you. A beautiful avatar photo as well.

Basically I stick to raw because I believe that if we were without technology then this is how we would eat. Our food may not be blended and processed but we would have the time to chew etc.

Also, when we cook foods we lose vital enzymes, nutrition and water content. The water in our foods is apparently very structured and good for us.

I still have cooked food occasionally and usually regret it the next day. Not because I ate cooked  but because I go nuts. Emotionally I bottom out. I'm a lot happier and nicer on raw. It rocks!

Great advice from Emi. Another thing you can do is to check out your local library for raw books. It's surprising the number they have now.

Thank you for the welcome Smiley I did hit Google (that's how I found this website Wink) but to be honest, I haven't found any compelling reason to do it. The science seems to support a balanced diet and that there are no indications that going 100% raw will improve your health as cancer and other degenerative diseases are found in animals who eat raw as well. Also, Wiki says, "Cooking is widely accepted to have been practised by at least 250,000 years ago, in the early Middle Paleolithic.[48]" So I've decided that improving my vege intake is probably the biggest adjustment I need to make and I'm going to stick around for some ideas on how to do that (and how to have less processed food). But 100% raw foodism isn't for me, I'm afraid, so I think finding the balance is the key for me! :D

Adding more vegetables, fruit and greens is the biggest step you can take in improving your health. But I also think there is more to us than just our eating habits. Our mental and emotional health impacts our body too. As you say, balance is so important.

Cancer in animals is generally produced by the environmental impacts we have made on their habitats and food sources. There are also genetic reasons and the general hazards of living in the wild! lol I don't think cancer is a disease we were meant to have, but yes it happens, even to the animals.

As for reasons for going raw? As I said before, everyone has their own. Mine started as a desire for better health. But my diet certainly wasn't the only thing I changed. A friend of mine went raw because it was simply how she prefered to eat her food, she liked the taste and nothing more.

Perhaps you will want more raw foods as you eat more, eventually reaching a high percentage. And perhaps you won't. That's entirely up to you and you're welcome here anyway!

Hey Ayla,

Welcome Smiley It's Georgia here!

Remind me once Bhala's a bit older and I'm ready to be more organised again to make you a yummy raw food cake...apparently I'm quite good at them Smiley yummo!

My reasons are sanity, energy and health/pain free living after spending years quite unwell. And it's als what feels and seems right for me. THough I'm the first to admit (as you've been witness to) that I am still addicted to cooked food and recently have been indulging....much to my detriment mentally, emotionally and physically....and I'm sure spiritually too.

Even if you're not interested in going 100%, just making one meal a day raw (like a fruit salad or green smoothie for breakkie) will help boost your energy I reckon. You said  the other night that you had enjoyed them Smiley

See you soon xo

Hello Ayla, beautiful avatar of you and your bub!

I first started to introduce a lot of raw fruit and veggies for health benefits I discovered when I substituted them for cooked, starchy vegan foods. Including more fruit and veggies will do you great I believe, but as you suggest, so will "wholer" foods...processed foods have a lot of dead energy stored in them. One unexpected benefit of eating raw is that I feel an amazing connection to the "natural world". It's hard to explain but I basically feel connected to everything that is, and this brings much happiness and confidence to me.

There are many different approaches to raw health but most agree that the key is basing diet on fresh produce...and  this includes lots of green leafies - yum!!

Enjoy your journey!

AYla, the philosophy behind raw is simple, people do it because it makes them feel (and look) unbelievably good. Fresh foods taste great good too. As far as the philosophy of eating, be your own guru. Let your taste decide whwat foods are yummy enough to eat, and enjoy the journey! You will observed (guaranteed) a spontaneous transformation in you. So don't stress out, have fun. I do! Smiley

Warm greetings,
Gosia
