how do you stop oranges going moldy?

above is how i store my oranges, it seems that one or another orange starts to mold within a few days..

oh and heres a photo of the amazing banana boy or son of gorilla as the market guy says..

Son of Gorilla is gorgeous. Nice photo.

I put my oranges in the fridge. If I want to eat them at room temp I get them out an hour or so before hand.

i'll have to buy another fridge..

is there no other old wives remedy or something to keep away the mold?

Les - aeration will help - ie getting them out of the box. Have you seen those tiered hanging wire basket things?

Hmmm.....how to explain them? Imagine 3 hanging baskets - small medium and large, held together by a series of small chains that all join on a central hoop, that you would hang from the ceiling/beam. Small basket drops down to a medium basket beneath, drops down to a larger basket. When collapsed, they would sit inside each other.

Anyhoo - air circulation will keep mold at bay longer. Popping the oranges into any container that allows air flow up and through.

I can't bear to put my oranges in the fridge, but I don't live in steamy climes. Citrus adores sunlight, and they can be kept in the sun quite happily, if you are eating your way through them quite regularly.

i saw storm on one of his video's with a huge pile stacked up in his kitchen, but he lives in the high sierras and its as dry as a bone up there, never had this problem in Perth or Adelaide so it must be the steamy climes.. i'd put them outside on the balconey but the bush turkeys like them..

MG is right...aeration is the key...mold wants moist, warmth to grow. I keep mine in a wire fruit bowl and they do realy well.

my organic orange and manderine source came back online from saturday and not one has a trace of mold so there must be something in that. anyone who tells me organic and regular food tastes the same i'm just gonna call them a *head from now on, the taste difference is amazing and as i've replaced all but one meal with fresh orange juice now my energy is off the charts. it makes me want to seriously consider buying a five acre property next so i can grow my own fruit in abundance, i think its the only way to secure true quality of everything i want..

organic vs non-organic - one of the HUGE differences is usually the time it's been sitting on the shelf, organic produce tends to get from the farm to the consumer much faster, which means it is much fresher and doesn't breakdown as quickly.
Organic fruit and veg does taste a lot better than the usual stored for a long time produce (and higher nutrients, and usually better farming methods, etc), but fresh out of your own garden/someone else's garden/own pots is even better
