Does anyone know if chia seed or flaxseed can replace fish oil? I am afraid fish now is not very safe.

From my understanding some brands of fish oil could be considered dodgy because they contain high mercury levels. This mercury is in the fish because most of the sea in the world is polluted.

These dodgy brands tend to be the cheaper ones you can buy directly off the shelf.

The practitioner only brands which are only available after a consultation with the naturopath are usually more stringently tested.

I use to take a practitioner only brand of low reflux Salmon Oil tablets.

These were (supposedly) mercury free because they came from fast-moving cold water fish from pristine lakes, rather than from the open sea.

Not sure if this was fact or just a marketing ploy but they worked really well.

Agree with RGG, you can definately replace it with raw alternatives...  Cold pressed flax oil is good, I use it to marinate mushrooms as well...

Hi

I think flax oil will go rancid very easily, so I prefer whole flaxseed. And I still want to know can chia seed and flaxseed replace fish oil? Does anyone know anything about that?

This is the best information I've come across on raw fats:

http://www.treeoflife.nu/whyfat

I hope it's appropriate to post it here, Jen? Not sure of the regulations.

I am currently following Cousens' recommendation and taking coconut oil and ground flax (I make it into a delish fudge with vanilla powder and a little stevia). It digests well and I feel brilliant on it. I'm not so good with nuts and seeds. I also take a DHA supplement from golden algae (as does my son). I think this is important 'insurance' for healthy brain function and can be seen as a replacement for the fish oil you mention lovefood.

I'm also going to try growing purslane - it seems to be an amazing source of EFAs as the article mentions. I've googled it too and found lots of interesting info. I'm going to order some seeds so will see I can grow some plants on my kitchen windowsill.
