Hi all

I think I'd like to have a go at running. I think it would be fun.

Do I just put on my sneakers and go? On the lumpy bumpy footpath? Or do I go to a track somewhere?

Should I warm up first? What about stretching?

Where do I carry my water bottle? Do I carry a bag?

I think I'm about average fitness. I'm 24 years old. I currently do moderate intensity weight training 3 times a week (Curves). I'm somewhat overweight - 165cm tall 76kg. Weight is very gradually going down, eating about 60% raw.

Any advice on starting running?

Thanks all
Heidi

One of the best ways to start is using the Couch to 5k program http://www.c25k.com/.  There is a link to an Australian (metric) version of the program just under the introduction.

Other helpful sites are www.coolrunning.com.au and www.chirunning.com.

start of slow. i'm doing short runs at the moment combined with other exercise to ease into running again. so try run swim runs on the beach or combining short easy runs with other exercise. you can run then walk then run and keep doing that. this is supposed to be a good way to increase your endurance by resting and then starting again.

go to your local salvos and get a second hand book on running for 50c. that will give all you all you need to know about running training. and or join a running club.

oh and get super cushioned shoes. unless your a 50kg kenyan superstar running on dirt tracks...

Hey there Heidi, I started running last year and gradually got myself to the point where I could run 6 k's much to my Dad's shock! I have a thread here called 'I'm running" which has loads of advice in it. You don't have to post there ifyou don't want to but it's chock full of info from quite a few peoples.

Hi Heidi,

When I first started running, it was on a treadmill at the gym.  I started off just doing 1/2 mile.  After a week, that was easy.  Slowly, each week I increased the distance that I ran.  After a few months I could do 5 miles (this was in the US where we measure distances in miles!).

I've been on and off into running over the past 10 years.  There have been points at which I was running 5-8k most days, and other points where I don't run frequently at all (but do different sorts of exercise, mainly ashtanga yoga).  I love running, I hate running, I love running...I used to get the runner's high and would want to keep running for really long distances.  But I found it really hard on my body - knees and ankles especially.  Actually I really miss it, but every time I give it a try my knees end up hurting a lot.  I think I overdid it when I was younger.  So take it slow!

Good luck!

Vilde chaya this is happening to me now from running on the treadmill. My knees have given out.
Does anyone know what i can do for my knees please? I think running when im heavy wasnt a good idea. YOu definately have to start slow. I had so much energy that i ran 50 mins(loud dance music helped too) on the treadmill and the next day my knees killed, its in my bones are giving out thread. For a heavy person i was proud i was outlastign the fitness fanatics and they were looking but i was singing while i was running to show off as they were huffing and puffing after 10 mins. Even the girls couldnt keep up and they were so skinny and fit looking. LOL! Now i cant run at all and i dont know when i will start running again. But i want to so badly. Can you believe after years of not running and thinking it was the most awful exercdise to do i want to and crave to run? amazing! GO raw power!

Running on Raw!!

If there is pain when you're running, you're doing something wrong.  Slow everything down and make adjustments to your form until the pain stops.  Make sure you're landing lightly and directly above your feet.  Have a look at www.chirunning.com for information on correct body position.

I had started having injury problems, and this was as a fit runner, until I learned correct form and now I have ditched the cushioned shoes and run in Vibram Fivefingers without any pain at all.  It's wonderful and has brought a new enjoyment of running.  It takes time and effort but, as with changing to a raw foods diet, it's worth it.

raw connection - perhaps you could try using an elliptical trainer? Much softer on the knees because there is no impact, but it still allows the muscles to build.

I was inspired by this thread to give running a try again.

My energy is so high, but as I mentioned before I have troubles with the knees.  Years and years of running on pavement and treadmills, and gymnastics from age 3 to 18.

This time, as soon as I started to feel a little knee pain, I stopped running and powerwalked the rest of my route.  It was frustrating, because I had the stamina and energy to keep running, but I told myself it is better to be gentle and ease myself back into running.  Normally I would have pushed through the pain, then hurt for a week and not run again.  Well now, 2 days later, no pain, and I feel motivated to try running again.  I think going slow and being gentle with my body is helping.

I am also interested to read up on the chi running.  I'm sure I can improve my technique and get more benefits from this exercise.  If only it wasn't so cold in Adelaide right now!  (Pretty wimpy for a girl who grew up in Boston where we have snow on the ground all winter, huh?)

Well, I've been out for 4 runs over the last two weeks and it has been good. 3 times with my son in pram, which is definitely harder to do and I guess my form wouldn't been so great. I'm not pushing myself too hard, so have only been sore after one of the runs. I'm doing 1 minutes runs, with 2 minute walks. It is a bit of a push to keep running near the end of the 1 minute.

I saw the weirdest thing today. I was walking home, after a run and a guy ran past me on the road and he had no shoes on, totally barefoot. It looked so bazar to me. Anyway, I guess it makes sense from raw sensation's big thread about running.

i know lots of barefoot runners! One lady says the worst bit is in races because there are so many people spitting!

Can't imagine it myself - my biomechanics are too flawed and I have about 15 excess kgs Smiley
