Hi all,

I have done some searching but can't find quite what I am looking for.

Can someone tell me what greens go in green smoothies and what else you put in?

I have read that spinach is good but was wondering what other options there are?

Thank you!

Hi Ellie,

You're right, spinach is great.  You can use any greens, but some greens are more bitter than others, but from what I have read, the bitter greens are the greens that are more nutritional for our bodies.

But if you're not wanting to drink a bitter smoothie, then spinach, silverbeet and lettuces.  I'm sure others would give more ideas.

You can add some bitter greens in.....not enough so you can taste.....but enough so that you can get some benefit out of them.

Just add sweet fruit to compensate for that bitter taste perhaps.

With my kiddies, I use the spinach with sweet fruit like bananas, mangoes, peaches, berries.....whatever takes your fancy.  They absolutely love it.  I add alfalfa at times and other types of sprouts.

One piece of advice I would give is to make sure that you blend your greens first in the blender with a little water/coconut juice/home-made fruit juice, and then add your fruit in to blend.  This will ensure that you don't get a "chunky" smoothie.

The options are only limited to your taste....and the more raw you become, your tastebuds change anyway!!!!

To start with perhaps add more fruit than greens if you're not used to "drinking" greens.  As time goes by, perhaps you could increase the amount of greens and lessen the fruit amount.  Perhaps start with quarter greens/three-quarters fruit then increase it from there.  Others may have different opinions/ideas that they can give you too.

Good luck on your smoothie quest.

Luv

Thank you RoarOnRaw!

I just went and bought myself a better blender (a sunbeam cafe something or other) with the proviso that i will upgrade to a vitamix or similar if i use it enough.

I have made my first one already! (methinks I might be craving some nutrients after eating poorly for a while now) i put in a packet of baby spinach (150g) plus 2 apples and a banana (small). It makes a lot of green smoothie!!! 2 tall glasses worth. But I figure its better than the milky way I just had...

Actually the taste is quite mild, the spinach is a very friendly flavour - and the apple seems to be dominating. Will experiment with other greens soon. The benefit of baby spinach is that it comes pre-washed which is good for a lazy bugger such as myself.

looking forward to experimenting!

mmmmmm! I'm having one now. Kale, dates, banana and water. Delish! You can also add some herbs such as mint, parsley or lemon balm to your GS. Gives them a great flavour. Blueberries can disguise the green too if you add loads of them. Yummmmmmmmmmmmmm!

My Green Smoothies have evolved over the last 2 years. I'm adding a lot more sprouts and wild greens as well as the greens I grow in my garden. They have more recently become super smoothies. Yesterday in my GS I had:

handful of 3 different types of kale (home-grown)
handful of dandelion leaves (wild)
4 violet leaves
handful of rainbow chard (hoem-grown)
handful of spinach (home-grown)
several nettle leaves (home-grown)
sprig of parsely
1 raspberry leaf
several corn salad leaves
handful of sunflower sprouts
2 bananas
1 wedge of pineapple
1/2 orange (home-grown)
1/4 cucumber (including skin)
1 dessertspoon spirulina
1 dessertspoon bee pollen
1 tsp maca
1/4 tsp crystal manna
1/4 tsp acidophilus
1 dessertspoon flaxseed oil
in a base of spring water and a handful of soaked goji berries

this gave me just over a litre of the most amazing green smoothie ive ever tasted. Of course, green smoothies don't have to be this complex but Im into supernutrition-mode at the moment. Smiley

This morning ours was 5 apples and half a bunch of celery - start with a cup of water and add the chopped up pieces of fruit slowly until it's all smooth. Simple and tasty. It also makes great iceblocks.

Celery also sounds like a great idea! I used to love carrot celery and apple juice. Could make a version of that!
