I think that it's not the fruit per se, but their quality that causes the issues mentioned. I used to love durians, but because I could not get a fresh one, so I used to buy the frozen variety (a whole frozen durian). Then, one day, Luke brought home some frozen ones, without the skin, in plastic bags. I had a few and ... vomited!

I've been off durians ever since, still feeling reluctant today.
I've tried custard apples and persimmons, and their quality pretty much depends on where they were grown, how far they travelled, how they were transported. I've tried some amazing tropical fruit near Byron Bay, and some really yucky ones in Tasmania. I've had more luck with the yummy ones closer to where they are grown.
