I'm sure all (most?) readers of this message board are aware of the way many farmed chickens live, so it may not be worth watching, but it's probably worth mentioning to any the battery hen egg eating people out there you know, this Wednesday 9:30pm on the Ten network in Australia, Jamie Oliver's Jamie's Fowl Dinners is being shown. It was shown in Britain earlier this year and had a noticable effect on chicken consumption.

Did anyone watch the one that he did last week. It was quite scary thinking the SAD/SBD the 'normal' diet has on ones health I didnt actually think it was a bad as it is. Especially the last body that the German Dr brought out now that scared the pants off me. I thought that show was really really good.

I have been avoiding Jamie’s shows for a while now because I am scared I would accidently see his new show, the one where he raises animals (pigs, cows, chickens) and then cuts their throats on-air, chops them up and shows you how to cook with them.

Seeing something like this (apparently it has caused a bit of an uproar around the world where it has been shown so far) would upset me enormously, it would make me cry and maybe even vomit.

So I have been avoiding his shows for weeks, just in-case-I-accidently-tuned-in-to-it.

I thought Jamie's Fowl Dinners was "that" show but I doubt it since you are watching it too.

Anyway I have missed it now as got home too late, so what was the show actually about?

Thanks

He did show killing day old chicks, and killing a fully grown chicken.  I found the living conditions much more disturbing than the slaughtering. The guy killing the chicks obviously wasn't happy about doing it.  They only showed gassing them (quite graphically) they didn't show the putting live chicks through a mincer option, though it was mentioned.  If people eat animals, they should be prepared to see how they are slaughtered, and that's what he does, and the River Cottage guy too.  One of the biggest problems is that people don't even think of what they are eating as having been alive before they eat it.  Showing stuff like this does make that connection, and in making that connection it raises awareness.

The show wasn't about the ethics of eating animlas or not, it was about the ethics of consuming something with a poor quality of life, and how a better quality of life makes it taste better anyway.  It didn't get into a better quality of life usually means it will also have more nutrients, but you can't expect everything to covered in a 1hr show.  It was also about raising awareness of where food comes from.  So many kids these days don't even know that peas come from a pod, even in vege shops they sell shelled peas.  Some people think spaghetti grows on trees.  There is a huge disconnect between where food comes from.

I don't know how anyone could eat a hotdog after watching what the MRM (machine reclaimed meat) was made out of! I knew what MRM was, I knew it's a big part of pet food (a vet many years ago told me if you took an x-ray of a tin of kitty kat pet food it showed up virtually as solid bone because it was so much mashed up bone, and it caused huge problem for cats due to the high bone content), I knew chicken nuggets etc were made from it, but actually seeing it like that.....  yuk!

I found the living conditions much more disturbing than the slaughtering.

Absolutely!

As was seeing the especially-bred fast growth chickens that have such distressing leg injuries because their legs simply cannot bear the weight.

For some reason the most distressing thing for me was watching tiny tiny chicks on conveyor belts, and the rough and tumble journey that their little bodies endured.  They looked so alarmed, as any baby would.

Jamie is leading things in the right direction, and I applaud him for all that he is doing.

It seems to be a common theme at the moment for chefs to connect with the food that they are eating and serving.  Gordon Ramsay too is raising pigs and whilst he is worried about his small children becoming attached, his consulting "pig professional" thinks that Gordon is the one becoming attached to the animals that one day are going to be on a plate with apple sauce.

I've taped it but haven't watched it yet, I'll wait until after exams I think...

My cousin owns a broiler chicken farm in Hastings, he absolutely refuses to eat any factory farmed chicken even though he grows them.

I knew it happened (the killing of the chickens and the way they live) but seeing it like this has really really really brought it home for me. I havnt touch a piece of meat (yes I was still eating little bit here and there) since the show.

Just the thought of how Jamie killed that poor little bird was just too sad for me I was nearly in tears. I just dont know how ppl can see this and not get fased by it..... So so so sad. Bring on raw vegan food for me any day....

It was shown in Britain earlier this year and had a noticable effect on chicken consumption.

I understand the consumption of conventional raised chickens has gone down BUT the consumption and popularity of free-range chickens has risen.

So if vegans were hoping to get people to stop eating chickens from this show, I am not sure it has really worked out they way they imagined.

My cousin in England has said free-range products are entering mainstream popularity, mainly in thanks to Jamie Oliver promoting them on his shows.

Anyway, just thought I would mention that.
