Pure shea butter is a delight. I picked up a block of it at a health show earlier this year and adore it. It's thick but melts at body temperature... way thicker than coconut oil and doesn't dry skin out as coconut oil seems to after using for a period. I'm loving it on my hands before I garden and it makes them easier to clean up too. I've also been melting just a little in my hands and occasionally putting on my face.

Unprocessed it has a really natural plant smell. It's often found deorderized though, which is a sure sign it was badly extracted and had to be 'descented' to make salable. I would love to try the fresh nuts one day... imagine breaking them open and using the oil from crushing them in your hands on your skin.

Jason has a mainstead brand in health food stores (here in Canada and in Australia I think too) however I'm really not sure it's not artificially scented... it smells so strong.

Pure shea butter is a delight.

Yes I have just brought some for the very first time too.

I was planning to use it all over my body but I have found it does not melt well enough (our bathroom is freezing - so not surprising) so I am using it on my face.

If I want to use it all over, I have had to mix it with the coconut oil, just so it spreads right.

I was thinking of melting it in a bowl over a pan of hot water (like you do with chocolate) and then using it. Not sure if you can do this or not.

I understand you can use it in your hair too.

Anyway, apart from the difficulties I am having, I love it.

I have just found an on-line site for a Shea Butter Institute. They are even advertising a 2008 International Shea Butter Convention.

Any solid hard to handle wax like shea or cocoa butter can be warmed up and then have some runny, or at least an easier to handle, oil/wax mixed in with it.  Surprise surprise I will recommend jojoba as the something to add in Smiley but you can use whatever you want - it is all a bit try it an see, plus what ratio works for you in winter and a chilly bath room would probably be too runny and messy to use in summer, so remember one fixed ratio of quantities will not be right for all locations for all year.  Plus once you start mixing things up it's more of a chance for things to go off, so don't make big quantities, just go for small combinations.....

I usually hate posting skincare recipes, what someone loves someone else will think it too oily, (except for jojoba Smiley )  but here is one with shea butter....  this is actually one I've been using for years, I see shea, I make this....

Aloe Body Butter Souffle

The mixture produces a viscous, creamy substance that will blanket the body with a soothing sensation, which will restore the skin's balance.

Ingredients: Half a cup of aloe gel or juice; 1 cup of shea butter; jojoba or oil of your choice; optional white clay, rose powder or sandalwood powder, or similar.

Compounding directions: Place the shea butter in a glass bowl, or if you're really clever, get a wide mouth glass jar and do all the warming melting and storing in the one jar. Slightly warm the shea over hot water until it is soft. While stirring, add the aloe juice or gel. Next, add a few drops of oil. While stirring, slowly begin to add the optional clay/powder to the mixture. Keep in mind that you can adjust the consistency of this recipe. If the mixture is too thin, then add a little bit more clay and if it is too thick, add more aloe or oil. Now you are ready to fragrance the mixture or you can keep it unscented.

Thanks Melb for that recipe, will try it soon.

I had a 'natural' manicure the other day, and instead of icky cuticle cream the therapist used shea butter instead.  Lovely!!
