Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone had any good tips for boosting the immune system of an 18month old?
Specific foods, superfoods, vitamins etc? any other tips?
anything with lots of anti-oxidents and anti-cancer properties?

Thanks!!

Hi Katie,  Great to see you! When I went and saw Don Tolman speak he talked about berries as being the best things for the immune system. He said that the Latin word for berries mean vaccinate and that if you eat local berries, and lots of them it should boost your immune system for a year.

Hi Katie,

It's lovely to see your beautiful face here. Smiley

My observation with my own kids has been that if they eat lots of raw (especially fruit), then they simply do not get colds/flus. I've been also big on breastfeeding (ever since I connected with my intuition), and I do think that breastfeeding is very good for the immunity, as lots of loving touch and close contact with the mummy's body is. My daughter was breastfed until 3.5 years-old, and it was her who chose to stop, not me. My son, unfortunately was not so lucky - I did not have enough milk, because I stupidly followed advice from a stupid book to feed on schedule. Sad

Thanks guys Smiley

Great tips Smiley
Any more ideas? anyone?

Any information on superfoods (berries, greens, purple corn powder, gojis, cocoa etc) and their effects on sickness in young children? especially shrinking unwanted growths?
or complimentative therapies? or just general food ideas?
Really any information on things that help with childhood illness esp possible cancerous growths?

Thanks
Katie

Im going to second the berry suggestion. Id think a focus on vit c would be the best thing you could do for immunity through diet, and as long as plenty of fruit is eaten is not an issue.

Apart from that probiotics are good for immune health, we get them through breastmilk early in, but if not on breastmilk anymore would have to find another source. Im not sure if there are any age restrictions on probiotic supplements but that would be my best suggestion. I know (ok warning not vegan) raw goats milk is meant to have plenty of good bugs like breast milk, and yoghurt is another good kiddies food.

I believe (well ive heard anyways) that coconut oil is good for the immune system, is also meant to feed the good bacteria, same of course with coconut water, flesh, etc. Could maybe make up some tasty raw chocolate with it. I make a raw carob sweet with it thats very healthy.

Id be wary of using cocoa, i know kids like chocolate but way i see it cocoa is still a stimulant and maybe not ideal for everyone.

Another good supplement is coq10, but again, not sure on safety with children, but also good for immunity.

Umm, prepared to be shot down for saying this (coz there could be a serious problem and thats why your asking) but most kids build up immune strength by being exposed to things, which is when they end up sick. So colds arent really a bad thing in children. A simple trick is just to let them be exposed to alot, meaning let them play in the dirt, be around sick people, public places.

If its for other more serious matters those are the two supplements i consider the best for immunity, ive used them myself (probiotics and coq10 i mean). I took 3 doses of probiotics with my tummy bug and it cleared it up.

Another one ive found useful is olive leaf extract, but again, look into it for safety in children. I myself reacted badly to this stuff at first by taking too much, and had to start low dose and build up. So id be very careful with doses if using this, but its a great for the immune system.

Other than that, green juices, green smoothies are going to be very healing. Hope that helps  shrug

Just did a brief search coz i was curious, from what i read:

Probiotics - Perfectly safe in children and a good idea
COq10 - Not enough evidence to ensure safety in children, so maybe not a good idea
Olive leaf extract - Not recommended in children under 2

Ok, so that leaves the probiotics, lots of vit c filled foods, berries, and coconut oil. Mmmm, all of that sounds pretty good, making me hungry, haha.

In fact, I've always heard this is an excellent thing to do too. I don't have a problem with my kids doing this at all (unless a serious health risk like glandular fever or something of that ilk). Nothing to be shot down for at all. In fact a wise point!

I'd be wary about coconut; in very small children it can be part of an allergy/intolerance; I really hate to say that, because I truly believe in coconut, but please be mindful.

Greens can be good - I've whizzed bananas, spinach & strawberry together for my 1 year old, and although it's very green, it tastes sweet and she eats it no problem - when she had mucous build up from food intolerance/allergy it cleared up this problem quickly and gave her lots of lovely good stuff.

Cheers, Niqi

So true! How did I forget that. I used to be delighted when my kids got sick. I never overcleaned my house like some of my friends did, or panicked when they put weird things in their mouths (except for cigarette butts at the park once) but delighted in the exposure.

My kids are rarely sick. Occasionally I treat them with some homeopathics if they seem to be stuck with something. Such as, Brock has had the same cough for two weeks. So I've been dosing him with a remedy for that. And very occasionally they will get panadol. When? If their temperature goes above 39 for a period of a few hours and they are losing energy rapidly. Why? Because I've been told that brain damage can occur with temperatures this high. Each to their own...

Mind you, I wasn't so grateful after three or four nights of a feverish, temperamental, toddler. I was GRRRish then!

Ive never heard about that with cocount oil and allergies, thats interesting, will remember that.

Kids and temps, yep, defo dont let them get too high. Im al for all natural, but there is still a place for medicine and a kid with a temp that high is very very sick. Unfortunately the public isnt all as well educated on the use of panadol for temps as you raw sensation, even some doctors over use it sadly. Youd think with all their knowledge on how the human body works theyd know that low level temps are helpful, but yeah that high you defo want to bring it down, kids crash fast.

The doctor I saw until this year said that he is more interested in the disposition of the child with the fever. He said that if a child has a very low fever but is lethargic and unhappy he is more concerned than one who has a high fever and is happy and bouncing around.

This is great info for me. Must agree I have always let my kids be exposed dirt and common childhood illness.

I was wondering if any of you have experience or suggestions for kids and eczema, my youngest has it on his hands and I've tried numerous alternative external remedies, it settles down only to flare up again, especially in the cold weather or just before he gets a cold.

Alison i read wheatgrass juice is good for eczema and for katie good for cancerous growths to rub on. Also if you have quite alot of mould growing in the bathroom this can exacerbate eczema especially when breathing it in. YOu can use vinegar and teatree oil to kill fungy. Sometimes fungy mould can be invisible and still thrive especially if water has only washed it off it aint completely gone. So try to keep the bathroom well ventilated.

The only thing thats natural that can get rid of cancerous moles or growths is 'cansema' also known as bloodroot paste but be careful(as it can eat the cancer all trhough to wherever its spread, so its best done in its early stages) and research this and get a professional to do it if possible to remove the mole from it especially an alternative practioner who is willing to do it.

I would also get bubz onto green smoothies. Vitamin c and all the above replies. Not sure if its true but you can also try glyconutrients for cancer and immune system. Glyconutrients are 8 simple sugars that are obtained from many different foods even seaweed etc and these 8 sugars are missing from people diets but people claim its healed them of many things.

kt, best of luck using the natural options, its always really heartbreaking hearing bout sick kids.

Alison, my sister has had eczema all her life, and its the worst on her hands. Shes really chemical sensitive on her skin so avoiding contact with nasties chemicals has been whats helped her.

Shes seen a dermatologist, been given cortisone creams and all the traditionals, but it keeps at bay as long as she doesnt use soap at all. She washes her hands with water, the rubbing action is what cleans, if she really must use soap, something as gentle as possible. Have you tried using castille soap? alternately there are soap free products out but they are usually loaded with other nasties as well. Shes also had to be careful with what she washes her clothes in because it flares it up. I dont know what products you use but id look into everything that your child is exposed to on a daily basis, there may be a culprit.

If it flares up in cold weather there may be a dry skin element to it, might have to keep up regular moisturising.

Also if its just before he gets a cold, may be an immune connection so all of the above might help prevent it too.

Best of luck, its causes no end of dramas to my sister. Shes also said that overwashing even with just water causes problems too, might be something to keep in mind.
