We had the best weekend. It was quiet, peaceful and spent at home - which is a bit of a change for us. Normally we are out and about, going to the beach, visiting friends, bushwalking, surfing, etc. It was nice to relax as a family and enjoy eachothers company.

I was on a parenting forum earlier and a topic came up about childcare and mortgages, etc. Basically, making money to support our lifestyles and at what cost?

It got me thinking about living our priorities. Living our values. What things are important to me, and do my actions support them?

I have always felt grateful that I can be a SAHM. I went back to work for a few months when DD was 2, but it just didn't feel right. So we changed the way we lived in order for me to stay home with her. A decision that I am grateful that we had the freedom to make.

In order to do it though, we had to 'sacrifice' a few luxuries, do without a few things. But because I valued being with DD and my role as mother, those things suddenly lost their appeal.

And I guess it is the same with eating raw. When we choose raw, many other things have to be put aside (like my love of dimsims!) but when taken in view of the bigger whole, they aren't important and seem like a small thing to let go of.

It is an evolving process. Almost a stripping bare of the fluff and getting to the centre of what's important. When I focus on what I value, when I choose the goal and keep it in mind, the other stuff just happens. Choosing what I DO want is much more productive for me then focusing on what I have to do without.

And it is effortless when I am coming from the right frame of mind.

lol, what a ramble. Hope you're having a great day!

Hi all, hope this finds you having a wonderful day.

I have had the best week. Filled with sunshine, fun and great friends. Who could ask for more?

A friend of mine is starting her transition to raw, which is fabulous to be a spectator of. She and her 4 children are already vegetarian and prefer most things fresh and organic, so it isn't going to be a huge stretch for her and summer is fast approaching with it's variety of delicious fruits and vegetables. Her husband will be harder to convince, but she is of the mind that leading quietly by example is a much better approach than preaching until you're blue in the face. I couldn't agree more! Goodluck babe, I'm here is you need anything.  heart

I've just got back from a ride with the bike trailer. It's such a great invention! We use it almost every day and it gives us the freedom to get to the beach, the organic fruit and veg shop and the markets - my three favourite places! I can see me using it long after DS is out of it, though perhaps I will look for a more streamlined version as it's quite wide.

We've been at the beach, a little windy but worth the effort because the whales were close to the shore. I feel really blessed to be able to see them and for my kids to experience it too. Sometimes there are dolphins too, but not as much the last few weeks.

Off to recharge with some strawberries. They are sooooo good at the moment! These are from a friend's garden and are heaven for the tastebuds. Making my mouth water just thinking about it.  ohyeah

Thanks for dropping by beautiful free. I find your postings a positive read too and very informative.  heart

I am spending more time on my bike and at the moment it is my sole source of transport, besides walking of course. When we lived on the farm, my options were more limited to a vehicle. But being in a regional town has completely changed that and it's given me the confidence to attempt some longer rides too. Thanks so much for inspiring me in that area Free.

I love that the more I do it, the stronger I feel. Each week I try to tackle a more challenging ride, either further or with more hills, and it is showing for me.

Over the weekend we headed off the grid and took our tent to camp out on the beach. The weather wasn't perfect for it, but we still enjoyed ourselves! A fresh water spring for drinking water, bags and bags of fruit and greens, crystal green water, white sand, my lovely husband and kids. It was such a wonderful weekend!

Friends of ours came out to see us on Saturday afternoon which was a pleasure. The kids (6 altogether) explored the rocks and a cave and then had a bit of a paddle. It was chilly and the adults chickened out! It was great to explore it all from their perspective, everything felt new and magical.

DH and I went swimming later on when the wind had settled down. It felt so invigorating! I felt so alive, so in the moment. ykwim? Looking forward to getting out more over the summer months.

Sleep was a little elusive, so I am off for an early night.

Have a great week all!

Wow my pleasure Emi :-) Isn't it great for our fitness when all other modes of transport are cut off to us ? Im so glad you are out their adventuring Emi, good on you! Yes tackle those hills, this is where the real fitness gains are at.  Anything you have fear/apprehension about doing is usually going to give you the best results, hills definitely fall into this catergory for me and Harley when he first started riding.

Your swim sounds lush, Im actually missing taking a dip, too many crocks up here!

I lived in Darwin when I was a kid, for about 12mths. I remember someone losing their dog to a croc while fishing off the jetty. Until then I thought it was a bit of an urban legend. My grandfather told me that it happened frequently up the nth QLD coast too.

Australia has some dangerous waters. Crocs up north, jellyfish all down both sides and great whites at the bottom (generalising hugely of course about their geographical locations) a pure pleasure to live here don't you think? Along with redbacks, tiger snakes, king browns, etc. You wonder what the first explorers thought when they got here and discovered our natives!

We have something exciting going on at the moment and I would love to share it with you, but I'm not going to until it's final! The excitement makes me feel like I am going to pop! lol

Hi!  I'm just wondering what type of bike trailer you have?  I'm looking for one and would love some advice.  The guy at the bike store was trying to sell me one with an alloy frame as he claimed it was nice and light to tow, but I've seen some on ebay with a steel frame that are the same weight as the alloy.  Maybe the width is something to consider too?  I'd only have one child to go in it, but there would be many trips to the beach and to the store as I'm trying to reduce our car usage.  Does yours convert to a stroller as well?

Thanks,
Annette.....rawmuma

BB - you'll have to wait a bit longer yet!!!  afro

Annette - I have a twin bike trailer because I wanted room for all of the other things we carry around too. It has a twin seat at the front, which allows DS to either sit in the middle, or to the side if I put another bag in there. It also has a compartment at the back for the extras.

It does convert to a stroller, but I never use it. I took the handle and front wheel off. The F&V shop we go to has room at the front for me to park it and anywhere else doesn't really require DS to stay strapped in. In saying that, if we were going to a shopping centre or something, I might put them back on.

It is wider than the bike of course. And the single trailers are a lot smaller. But we have plenty of bike paths and room beside the road. I usually choose my route accordingly, though sometimes that means a decent hill to cross!

It is easy to tow most of the time. A head wind is a little interesting and involves a bit more huffing and puffing but already it has got easier and I'm sure it will continue to do so in the future.

Before it arrived I was concerned as to whether I had made the right choice going for the cheaper option. But in having it to compare to the one at the bike shop that was an extra $300, I am pleased with my choice. They are identical.

Goodluck finding the one that suits you if you decide to get one. And as I said I am happy to PM where I got mine from.

Neet - that's because us aussie girls are built a little tougher than the rest! And I agree about purpose. We each have a special set of gifts that make this world a better place. Life is our refining process.

Thanks for the info - the photo of yours looks like the exact one (including colour) that I had narrowed my options down to.  Because I can be a little impatient I decided to just rig something up and see how it works.  I got a golf buggy from a garage sale (negotiated and paid $3), used a couple of zip ties to attach it to the rack under Little Man's seat and (was going to attach a photo but can't figure that out), used some bungy cords to tie a backpack on to the buggy and we took off for a 1.5km trial run to the playground. It worked really well and will do for now.  I will need a proper trailer sometime soon - Nicholas likes his seat on the back, but I think he'll outgrow it in another few months or so.  I will contact you to see where you got yours, thanks!

Looking forward to hearing about your exciting something!

in joy,

Thanks for the great post on my thread Emi :-)

Harls always says to me "a headwind is the best training ever" or "perfect fitness inducer" and I always found this very motivating when I was on my trip, each peddle stroke into the wind I saw myself getting fitter and fitter.
Well done its great to see you using your strength and energy to power you & DS to get around, an inspiration to mummys & potential cyclists everywhere im sure xx
Great photo, nice bright trailer colours for the road :-)

Getting around via bike and walking has become something that I am really passionate about. I have even written a few letters to the council about places that they need to make safer for cyclists. It's amazing the different people I meet to.

I met a woman at the park one day who was admiring my trailer as I was admiring her bike and physique. We got talking and she was 65. Weekly she does a 110km ride to visit her daughter (stops halfway for the night). I had just started out and felt awed. It certainly gives me a point to work towards! At this stage I couldn't do that in one go, but the more I ride the easier the goal appears.

I started out with a very cheap bike, but made sure it was the right length from handlebars to seat to pedals for me and that the frame was light. I then got a new seat, new handlegrips, and am now getting some road tyres because my bike had knobbly tyres for gravel riding which I did a lot of before we moved here.

I will eventually upgrade as I go further distances. I didn't want to have an excuse not to be out there, so went with what I could afford and then made it comfortable.

I had the choice of darker colours but thought it might be safer to go with the bright yellow and blue. It did have a red flag, but we lost it in one of those said headwinds.  shrug lol

One of the routes we take involves sharing the road with roadtrains and trucks for about 3kms. The drivers are very courteous and we haven't had any problems which I'm grateful for. Thanks truck drivers!
