I recently purchased the book, "Self healing Colitis and Crohn's" after being diagnosed a few weeks ago with a severe case of Ulcerative Colitis.  I still haven't finished the book, only recieved it a few days ago, but what I have read makes a lot of sense to me.  Can anyone tell me where I can find a doctor, nutritionist, dietician, whatever I may need to start on a raw foods diet?  I am currently on Prednisolone and Mesalazine for the inflammation and so I would really like to have someone that is maybe in the medical industry but open and aware of alternative therapies and diets to help me manage the disease.  I'm not sure exactly who I need to see.  If anyone could make any recommendations it would be very much appreciated.  I live in Toowoomba, QLD, but will travel if I have to.

Cheers

hello Deme.........i have just come through a bad stage of uc...have had it for yearrrrrrrrrrs...going onto a raw food diet 5 years ago, gave my body the best environment to heal...last year did a damn dumb thing, and ate raw chilli and wasabe consistently for around 6-8 weeks...got myself in an appallling state of pain, imflammation and bleeding and depression..and a year on im back almost to completely healed again...and able to eat raw tomatos etc again....

i couldnt take pain killers as i dont have a liver that can process them well(in a way im glad about this...)

i dove straight into a raw food diet 5 years ago....and never looked back....

cant shed any light on any medico professionals sorry...personally i am my own health professional....dont have faith in doctors etc for helping me with what i have suffered...or naturopaths etc..and thats not to be disrespectful of anyone in these fields/....i have  spent ohh around 50,000-80000$(maybe more- on alternative practitioners and doctors in the last 20 years...and thats not counting the years before that in mum and dads care.....

Hey Deme (& Neet :-)
I would highly recommend a consult with Dr Doug Graham.  Check out his website www.foodnsport.com, you can book a consult or look at the FAQs for a lot of valuable info.

Hi Deme,

Best wishes with your colitis. I've not suffered with it but speak to people who have/do a lot and can only feel for you with this set of symptoms. I have no doubt that it can be controlled at all.

I have to second Karenlovesraw though, the doc on the GC is awesome. If you do come and see her feel free to let me know and if I can get some free time we can meet up!

Hi Deme
you may like to check out DR FUHRMAN's web site at www.drfuhrman.com.  He has a load of information on your problems.  He is a MD and will consult on line, there is a fee for joining (very reasonable) and he has a lot of factual and researched information on his site.  Whilst he is not strictly raw foodist, he supports it and has a lot of dietary advice for treating all auto immune and digestive problems.  He will also advise you about how long etc to take the drugs you are contemplating, which is very useful when in your situation.
Do check it out - i am sure you will find it very useful

Hi Deme,

While I do not know of a doctor in your area that is specifically raw, if you care to phone Jean Gidley (see brochure) she may be able to refer you to a CHIP trained doctor in the sunshine coast area which is just down the hill from you so to speak. CHIP doctors have been trained to address lifestyle diseases using diet and education as the primary treatment. This education is world class.

What is CHIP?  http://www.chiphealth.org.au   http://www.chipglobal.org

Brochure: http://www.chiphealth.org.au/images/chip/summitfullprogrammod.pdf

Specifically regarding UC:
Recent research has shown a link between disease such as UC and Crones disease and bacterial dysbiosis. While treating stomach ulcers with the new antibiotic triple therapy, these conditions were concurrently eradicated. I assume that you know that stomach ulcers are in fact caused by bad bacteria residing in the gut wall – google: helicobacter.

I have suffered some discomfort in the past myself with this and colitis and was diagnosed with a helicobacter infection. No way would I submit to antibiotic nuclear winter of my intestinal flora, so I devised a different approach which proved very successful. Rather than take the antibiotic approach, I decided to take the Pro-biotic approach!

With a strategy of restoring the good bacteria in my GI tract, I decided to first to change my internal environment to favor good bacteria and second, to then re-implant the good bacteria in my GI tract. In my particular case, this proved so successful that I did not even make it to the second stage of the treatment.

I used a product named Homozon from America to create a favourable internal environment (imitations may not work) and after a couple of months all symptoms disappeared. The other product I procured was Eugalan Topfer from Germany (eBay) to re-implant the beneficial bacteria. I chose these products because of their outstanding pedigree. Lets face it. It‘s hard to know what garden variety health store supplements to trust in these days of $focused consumer marketing$.

Any approach which alters the GI environment for the better and encourages the growth of good bacteria – particularly acidophilus in the upper GI tract and Bifidus in the lower should serve to displace pathogenic bacteria and result in improvement. Pre-biotics may also help.

Feel free to PM me for further information.

Good Health,
Neo.
