I was performing beat to quarters and ceremonial sunset in Nowra on Saturday night.  Luke (the coconut guy) was supposed to be getting back to me with details about the drop, but he's been a little busy.  Will hopefully be getting those 500kg of coconuts soon.  Oh yeah, and if anyone else in Sydney wants any organic young coconuts in shell, send me a pm and I'll save you some.  Pick up point is North Strathfield. Probably will cost around $3 each.

I'll be at Northy St this Sunday with Sacha. I plan on doing my shopping and then hanging out at the From Earth and Water stall and eating raw pizza for breakfast! Yummmm. Or ice-cream, or cake or or or. I'll probably have oranges!

Oh wow... I just did the biggest sigh, imagining eating breakfast at From Earth and Water..... it was blissful just to think about it! :: love ::

It's only the price of them that seduces us!

No, the price does not really seduce me. As it is, I constantly get made fun of for “wasting” my money on organic food.

Coles is just convenient, thats all.

I can only buy organic at the weekend because Macros shop hours and my working hours clash and they are a 20 minute drive from us.

But Coles is open until 10.00PM and they are only a 3 minute drive from us.

And I prefer to buy fresh every few days, otherwise I find stuff goes off quickly, especially in summer.

I got greens from the Northy St market for $19 per kg on the weekend. It's Wednesday now and they look as fresh as the day I got them. Very happy girlie I am!

Sweetpea, I still have to go to the supermarket everynow and then in an emergency. You are doing what is right for you. Excellent!

I do bulk organic too through my food coop. This week:

13 kg bananas $39
18 kg oranges $38 (shared with Sandy)
6 paw paws $30
12 kg biodynamic pears $66
1 watermelon 2.40 pr kilo
3 celery $10.20
1 Cauliflower $3.50
3 bunches spinach $7.80
2 bunches kale $5.20
box 8 cos lettuce  $15 (shared with Sandy)
2 bunches chinese greens $4.40

So in total about $200, but the pears should last more than a week. I guess I average maybe $150 a week.

I don't spend money on much else than my rent and my food and travel. I would much rather spend the extra on organic, and this is only really possible by bulk buying with the quantities we eat. If you can get a buyers group together, usually organic wholesalers will let you buy from them.

Note, the bananas come to $3 per kilo, which is cheaper than most conventional supermarket bananas at the moment. When bananas are in season, $13 kg organic cost about $26. We have sometimes been lucky to get boxes for $8! These are usually Coles organic ones, which have been overstocked. The wholesaler then unwraps the Coles ones, and puts them in boxes. Once I got such a box, and saw the exact same bananas for $7 per kilo in the supermarket. That is nearly 10 times the price. But of course that is only in special cases, when you get extremely lucky.

After seeing the supermarket documentary this week on ABC, I am even more happy to be rid of Coles and Wollies. Just no way I would want to support that industry.

I am feeling very happy. Today for the first time ever, I found organic juicing carrots at Macros. They look awful but the are really sweet tasting, really lovely. They were $6.99 for a 5Kg bag. Pretty good value considering the non-organic juicing carrots I normally buy from Coles are $4.99 for a 3kg bag.

I know the ones you mean.  They are not organic.  They're probably around $1.50 each.  Once you've tried the organic ones it's hard to go back to the irradiated, formaldehyded, conventional Thai ones.

OK.  Problem I have is I need to be given time off work to go get the coconuts.  Haven't confirmed with Luke yet but I should be given time off on 29th September so I'll see if I can order them for then.
