I was off to the market this morning and was asking the (cert. organic) guys if they had any celery.
They were very friendly and said it is very very hard to grown organically and that it is probably best not to eat is.

Celery bought in the supermarket normally has a fungacide used against back spot and heaps and heaps of fertilizer to get the stalks nice and big....

Just some info..

Hi Eve,

I just wrote my weekly shopping list on another thread. In it are 3 bunches of organic celery bought through wholesale. I usually get a box of 8 huge beautiful organic celery for about $39. Again this week they look amazing.

I have been told the same by someone selling organic on a market. Not sure why they say that... It is very true that celery is one of the worst things you can buy conventional, so I stopped doing that. I remember seeing one celery for $10 in Macro Wholefoods once. Just insane prices. I think perhaps organic celery is just very seasonal.

Wow. I grew celery at home and it grew really well. Just perfect conditions for it I guess. I got some from the Northy St markets last week which was the best I've ever eaten! Yummmm...

I home grow it in Sydney all year round - it gets a bit smaller over winter but it's already started getting bigger with the slightly warmer weather.
Home grown you can do more companion planting and not having a mono-crop most diseases have more difficulty spreading. Maybe it's just a challenge when grown as a mono crop?

A smallish thin bunch of organic celery is currently $8.99 in Macros.

A very large thick bunch of non-organic celery is currently $1.99 in Coles

I think I will just have to go without.

i started growing my own celery , its actually easy job to do even in pots - indoors and rewarding :-) !!

if i would live somewhere colder (like NZ) i'd start thinking at using a part of the house just for 'indoor growing' -something like...

i'd start with wheatgrass and then up to more and more vegetables like celery...

celery needs moisture , good compost and some lime , seaweed , tea from time to time...

+ patience , like 4-5 months...

heres a web-page on celery growing btw:

good luck,!
