WOW!
Just after we thought we'd seen every possible permutation of raw food across California we came across Au Lac in LA on our last day before flying out. Not entirely a raw restaraunt per se, Au Lac still has a greater range of delicious raw dishes than most raw restaraunts we've seen (thoughtfully placed on a seperate menu), and is a great choice for going out to dinner with any "not so raw just yet" friends. All of the cooked dishes are completely vegan, however one thing has to be said about Au Lac's raw menu...
These dishes have to be tasted to be believed!
The food is a mixture of Italian, Vietnamese and sprinklings of Chinese, Malay, Thai and an eclectic mix of other influences. The cosy surroundings (complete with Wally the roving raw magician!) set the backdrop for a number of dishes that truly defy desciption! The chow mein made with young coconut noodles, fresh, crisp julienned vegetables and a rich, creamy sauce was simpy to live for. We had to be extremely restrained to save a promised portion for a friend waiting at home, which was more than made up for by being able to use this as an excuse to order more dishes!
Of special mention would have to be the stunning desserts made available including a melt in the mouth butterscotch pie, the always appealing durian cake and a range of other desserts (totalling around 10) that will have you coming back time and again.
If it sounds like I'm raving it's because quite simply we tried over 15 raw restaraunts on our trip, and Au Lac was head, shoulders, knees and ankles above the rest. Maybe the decor's not quite as flash as Roxannes or even Juliano's, but with food this good you're not going to notice one bit!
