Live Juicy sizes are quite small. In this photo I am wearing a size L cherry tank. My measurements are as follows:

• Bust: 90cm 
• Waist: 77cm
• hips: 94cm.

When it came to choosing a textile for this apparel line, organic cotton was an easy choice. Here’s why: organic and conventional cotton are grown very differently from one another albeit they both need water and soil. Organic growing methods use materials that have a low impact on the environment while conventional cotton is grown using toxic chemicals like pesticides, chemical fertilizers, herbicides or defoliants.

There is no arguing that organic crops are inadvertently exposed to persistent agricultural chemicals. They are carried in the air through rain and wind drift and have now become part of ground water due to their excessive use. The less money that goes into conventional growing methods the better! Making the choice to support organic cotton farming means that Alissa can feel good about sustaining a healthier growing method which is better for the lives of us all.

Get off the pesticide treadmill!

While in active use on farms and dye factories, toxic chemicals compromise the quality of our air, water, soil and subsequently our food and clothing supply. The pesticides used on cotton, whether in the U.S. or oversees, are some of the most hazardous available today. At least three of the petrochemicals heavily used in cotton production are in the so called “dirty dozen” of which 120 member countries of the United Nations Environment Program agreed to ban. These chemicals compromise the health and safety of farm and factory workers.

Did you know more than 99% of the world's cotton is produced in the developing world? These farmers often work without protective gear and without laws to further protect them. Heavy use of chemical pesticides in these countries are responsible for killing and sickening many farm workers and farmers by causing debilitating illnesses for many years after exposure.

During the lifecycle of a garment, some of the most instense exposure to harmful chemicals is the dyeing process. Chemical dyes are just as harmful to people and the environment. During the production process, the milled cotton is saturated with dyes. The final garment retains only a small percentage of dye used to color it, leaving excess waste. Wastewater runoff from farms and dye factories can cause death to wildlife in surrounding areas.

After the garment is produced, dyes can still pose a health risk to consumers. Chemicals reside in the cotton after products have gone to market. Washing your laundry isn’t enough. The best detergents won’t remove the chemicals completely, leaving them to be absorbed through the skin. Dyes pose serious health consequences including reproduction problems and a weakened immune system which can lead to increased risk for infectious disease, cancer and even death.

Tell me more about the benefits of organic agriculture, you say?

We are glad you asked. You’ve already learned organic cotton is grown without the use of harmful pesticides, chemical fertilizers, herbicides or defoliants. It is also grown from untreated and non-genetically modified seed; there isn’t a cotton gene that’s spliced with the gene of some other plant or animal (aka pure and simple goodness.) Weeds and pests are controlled naturally through use of traps, insect predators or non-persistent botanical pesticides (some are made with pure ingredients like chili, garlic and soap) which are broken down quickly by oxygen and sunlight. Methods like intercropping are used where a secondary crop is planted within the field to either provide nutrients to the soil and deter or detract harmful and beneficial insects alike. Often times these secondary plantings provide food for farmers or act as another source of income.

Organic agriculture protects the health of farmers, people in nearby communities and all living creatures. Organic production systems replenish and maintain soil fertility by building and supporting biologically diverse agriculture. It also conserves resources by using significantly less water and electricity than conventional farming.

Independent certifying organizations verify that organic producers use only methods and materials allowed in organic production as it holds them to strict record of their methods.
